Climate change is seen as an issue of contention, and arguably the reason for this is contending positions that are connected to broader political and social movements. This essay will discuss the origin, ideas and impact of the climate change social movement on the Australian Government and present insight into the broader political and social movements which have influenced its successes.

While there is little agreement among academics of how a social movements is defined, they are essentially a collective action in which people are educated and mobilised, often over years or decades, to challenge people in power, and to coerce society as a whole to address social problems or grievances in an effort to restore critical social values. The first stage, is a period used to describe society prior to the development of a social movement. The stage features two actors; the power-holders and the public. The power holders support the public through official policy, but oppose values held by the public when it comes to their real operational policy. The issue arises because of ‘naivety’ by the public, who support power-holders and decision makers under the assumption that real policy is congruent to their values.
