Summary Findings: The ABC data collection has helped me gain some insights on Oscar’s off task behavior. I noticed some patterns after carefully analyzing the raw data. One of the patterns that struck me most was Oscar got on task every time an adult took the initiative to redirect him either by touching his shoulder or speaking to him directly. Oscar responded to both cues effectively. When Oscar figures out there is no one praising him, commenting on his expected behavior, or encouraging him, then he stares and looks at other people, or things in the classroom. I am assuming that Oscar rocks his body back and forth because he does not like being idle or maybe it is due to health concerns. I will observe more to see if the off task behavior is somehow connected to the body rocking behavior. The data I have collected thus far gives me a clue that indicates the possible function of Oscar’s off task behavior is seeking attention. Oscar is on task as long as there is an adult around or near him. Also, whenever the adults redirect him, Oscar pays attention, makes eye contact and goes back to working on the given task. Each time he gets attention, he works and finishes his assignments.
