In the William Shakespeare’s play Othello, Iago is the antagonist. Iago manages to manipulate many characters throughout this play but I will be precisely discussing how he manipulated two characters, Othello and Rodrerigo. Iago hates Othello and is plotting to destroy him by making him believe that his wife Desdemona is having an affair with his lieutenant, Michael Cassio. He manipulates Roderigo by making him think that he will get Othello and Desdemona to break up in order for him to be with her. Othello is a moor from Venice. He managed to marry a beautiful venetian woman but was wrongly accused of using witchcraft on her because he is black. He is a general and works with his officer Iago. At first, Iago tells Othello that his wife is having an affair. Even though he has no evidence to support these claims, Othello still believes Iago because he is kind of insecure about himself since he was already accused of using witchcraft on her because he is a black man and there is no way Desdemona fell in love with him by her own free will. (2.2.) Iago starts by convincing him with lies that will lead to Othello’s downfall. After an incident happened, Othello removes Micheal Cassio from his position as lieutenant because he was drunk, Desdemona then begins asking Othello to give him his job back and that increases his suspicions that she is in fact having an affair …show more content…

Iago and Roderigo are supposed to be friends and Roderigo is mad that Iago did not tell him that she was married to Othello. Iago tells him that he hates Othello because he did not give him the promotion. Iago manipulates Roderigo a few times throughout the play since he thinks Iago will be able to get Othello and Desdemona to break up. In the beginning of the play, Iago uses Roderigo’s love for Desdemona by telling him to go with him to Brabantio’s house to tell him that his daughter ran away and got married to a black man. Brabantio sees that Desdemona is not in the room anymore so he gathers a group of men to find Othello. After finding Othello, he then gets the senators to condemn Othello but they do not do anything once Desedemona comes in and tells them that she is truly in love with him. Roderigo gets mad and tells Iago that there is no way Othello and Desdemona are going to break up but Iago continues to lie to him by telling him to trust him because he has a plan.
