Riesman argued that a society ruled by other-directed person lay emphasis on controlling /calculative dexterity over craftsmanship and expense accounts over bank accounts. Business is meant to be fun and mangers are meant to be humorous with secretaries and allure their bosses and clients. According to Riesman, the other-directed person has a tendency to belong to the company and have superficial ties in other institutions such as family, church and the community. Furthermore, the other-directed person views interpersonal efforts and tolerances as tenets that furnish a relationship. Conformity for the other-directed person suggested by Riesman seems strong in better education strata when under pressure. The other-directed person relies heavily on this relationship and approved standard of behavior. This really explains why we desire friends, colleagues to approve or like what we say and most at times what we post on social media platforms. According to Riesman description of other-directed person, “the other-directed types are to be found among the young, in the larger cities, and among the upper income groups, we assume that unless present trends are reversed, the hegemony of other-direction lies not far off” (20) it fits the contemporary societies today-not necessarily American alone.
