Trapped in Our Country’s Shadow. Everybody in this world have something they want to pursue. But for some people the things that can result in their happiness are overshadowed by either the things they regret doing in the past, family situation and even the country they were born in. Women in Somalia, located in East Africa, are prime examples of people who are trying to obtain their own happiness. But, are stopped from doing so because of the country they were born in. These women are trying to find some type of romance utilizing their own natural beauty and sexual appeal. For this reason, she is represented as an ugly person internal rather externally. Additionally, when it states
“ a body littered with ugly things” this quote can further stretch the understanding of the reader, as this can be compared to any floor that is natural beautiful. But, because there is an abundant amount of trash on it, it gives off this ugly appearance. However, once clean it can become radiant again. It is important to realize, that it has been said that many people judge others just based on what type of environment that person grew up in. In this poem case, the girl grew up in a war-torn country and thus is judged based on that aspect. In Ugly it states,
“But God, doesn’t she wear the world well”
What this quote further implies is that this girl is the epitome of the many issues that is surrounding Somalia and it’s something she cannot escape until these issues are resolved.
