Another enormous issue Americans should be complaining about, is the food children are being fed in Schools. More than one-third of American kids are obese or overweight. Nutrient-rich food are essential to mental and physical health. If our children are the most important investment for our futures, how we expect them to perform at their best with inadequate meals.
During President Nixon’s term he strengthened the school lunch subsidy program up to 25 million children. Subsidies were given to school districts to make sure that every child was fed at lunch time. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan both made cuts into the National School Lunch Act that led to school districts having less money to spend on lunches. This was in line with their party’s political stance which was to lessen the central government. The lower amount of money led to a decrease in nutritious food and an increase in processed food meaning higher caloric and sodium intake for children across the
As I walked into the cafeteria, I caught a whiff of the food being prepared in the cafeteria and thought to myself, “Why can’t we go off-campus to get lunch?” While SLA, the lunch program at Catholic High, provides the school lunches, there could be an alternative solution to this. Unfortunately, students are detained at school during lunch hours and are not able to leave campus during lunch forcing them to be served by SLA or bring their own lunch. If Catholic High School were to introduce an open-campus lunch, students and faculty would benefit greatly. While SLA does provide the lunch at CHS, they do not live up to their standard of “high quality, nutritious, and cost efficient”.
Yet, not looking at the bigger picture, the “BENEFIT” of these children. Poppendieck goes on to explain how since way back when the war began and how that set-in motion a “war on food” using surpluses as well as cutting the budget for lunches in order to make ends meet with these programs, yet that still didn’t get the job done. The significance that the government has held over these food programs are heavily weighed in her book. She gives us an overview with USDA reports, sit ins on courses with other educators, food personnel, and parents. The result is multiple views about the problems facing school lunch, and how we could find ways to improve them.
Cooper’s hands-on experience with the school lunch program, statistical knowledge on government influence, and her research and development on sustainable foods all make her argument very persuasive in “What’s Wrong with School Lunches?”. Cooper’s
Declaration on school lunches Barack Obama’s wife the first lady, Michelle Obama, organized the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act and it was being implemented in schools across the country to improve the meals that 32 million children eat each day. This was a groundbreaking legislation signed by the President on December 13, 2010, to improve the food we serve to our kids in school. This legislation provides assurance to parents that our kids are getting the same kind of balance and nutrition that they got at home. The importance of healthy school lunches isn’t heard enough.
Do you think school lunches are healthy for you or no? Allowing the principal to let us change the meals would lead to less healthy foods then they already are. Its a good thing to have healthier foods since they provide energy for the school day, allowing kids focused more on there works then there stomach growling. . The healthier the food you eat the less your stomach growls to disturb your thinking process or work ethic. Not eating as healthy could lead to energy lost.
Determining the healthiness of food being served to students during school lunches is a very important subject. Although eating healthy is important it should not be the only factor contributing to whether or not taking away students favorite school lunches is beneficial. I don't believe that it is a good idea to take away students favorite school lunches and replacing them with all healthy foods is a good idea because of these three reasons. One, the cost of the healthier food, two, the student environment and mood of the school, and three, the fairness to the students whose only meal is the lunch they receive at school.
School Lunch menus need to be changed. Many schools plan on changing their lunch menus. When changing school lunches many students will lose some of their favorite foods. When the schools do finally decide to change the lunches, it needs to be a change for students, they need to be healthier and it needs to be something different for students.
Look back at what you ate at school and ask yourself if it is healthy. Is there healthy alternatives to school lunch? Is there a variety of choices to choose from? Are there any vegetarian choices for the students? These are just some of the basic questions you would ask yourself when thinking about the risks of school lunches.
Child Hunger in America Anna Quindlen, author of “School’s Out For Summer”, noticed there was a problem of child hunger in America. “If there was, we would know about it. We would read about it in the paper, we would see it on the news. And of course we would stop it. In America.”
What would you do for lunch and how would you explain it to your parents after school? Students have been known to not eat lunch at school very often because, for the main reason, they don’t like it. Others say that they “aren’t hungry”, but you never know. Schools should just make the lunch more healthy and taste better. Even though school lunches could potentially make students sick and not feel good, some students say it is disgusting and causes them not to eat and complain because they’re not getting
However, many kids skip lunch because they are disgusted with the food given to them and to pay for the free or reduced lunches much of the money comes out of teachers paychecks. Michelle Obama will not take any request or take feedback to better the proposal. Firstly, michelle obama 's involvement in the new requirements is horrendous. Michelle has turned the deaf ear to parents. Nobody knows their child like their parents, and every child is different ,you can 't make a “one size
To begin with, the taste alone of school lunches is beyond unsatisfactory. The meals provided by public schools are not appetizing. There exists a tangible disconnect between the enticing, nutritious meals advertised on the school board’s menus and what the students actually receive—pathetic portions and lukewarm meals slapped onto a tray.
