Outdoor Play Setting For 3-5 Age Group Children

This outdoor play setting has been created for 3-5 age group children. I acknowledged that all children need to be able to get to everything in the outdoor play space. Children across ages and abilities should have access to and enjoy the play space and the opportunities it creates with their peers. My design is developed on the basis of 3-5 years children's natural play needs, taking into account their play behaviour engaged in at different developmental periods from age three to five, including the social, physical and cognitive forms of play. As children become older in their early childhood years and middle childhood they will seek to engage in play with others, sharing play experiences, building spaces to hide and pretend, socialising talking about their play adventures, making rules and testing their risk taking skills (Rogers, 2008). My design has included all prospects of 3-5 age children’s developmental needs.

I have included a large open play space in the design after considering the importance that children feel socially included in their play space. The play space inclusive to all children that catering for the diversity of children and the range of their potential needs, abilities, and choices.

I believe that constructive play is an important part of an early learning environment, with its rich capacity to teach children to problem solve, connect, understand and be inquisitive in their play. Through constructive play, children learn about the attributes of different materials, engage their curiosity and imagination, and experiment with applying concepts and seeking out new ways to use the materials. Patty Smith Hill’s recognition of children’s need for big body activity and social experiences led to the creation of larger wooden blocks for their play, a staple of any early childhood program.
