The Devil in the White City was written by Erik Larson and was published in 2003. By research, Larson recreates the lives of two real men in the Chicago World Fair. He uses two different plots to show some of the history during this time. One plot line is about Daniel Hudson Burnham, the man who builds the Chicago World Fair, and the other plot is about Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, the man who is a serial killer that goes through the fair to find his victims.

The key factors that provide a supportive speech, language and communication environments are – The physical environment is very important when creating a safe and secure setting that can support each child’s or young person’s individual learning needs and development to the best of their ability. The physical environments factors can include: • Noise levels • Lighting • Space • Distractions • Clear routines • Relaxes atmosphere • Adapted room and resources • Familiarity • Visual support aids. The roles and responsibilities of staff is that we should all understand our own roles and others carrying them out to the best of our abilities within the setting. in my setting at Grove Primary School, we make sure we can provide children and young people with their own key worker and they will have set activities and resources where their key worker will work alongside the child or group of children.
Competency Statement 1: To establish a safe, healthy learning environment When you are an Early Childhood educator there are some key factors that you have to keep in mind: 1. Creating a safe environment and 2. Creating and instilling in your students and yourself a healthy environment. Safety to me is a very detrimental factor in Early Childhood, because when you deal with young children you always have to watch out for their well being as if they were your own.
Joanne Lipman wrote an article on “why tough teachers gets good results”. Teachers used to call students names and even physically correct them, in the today world they would have already been fired. Lipman doesn’t believe in calling kids names but he also doesn’t believe in this, “the conventional wisdom holds that teachers are supposed to tease knowledge out of students, rather than pound it into their heads”. There are eight principle and research that explain why the conventional wisdom is wrong. Tough teachers do get good results and they always will.
At Frist Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown I learned while observing and interacting how some of the different set up of areas impacted a student’s learning and space. Some of the areas were used for quiet time, noisier activities, and more active learning. This related to the (Component 2e) because organizing physical space around the classroom provides the student a variety of ways to learn together or alone inside the classroom while also developing their social skills and working through any academic or social difficulties (Component 2d). Lastly, at Head Start the lead teacher provided the students with daily duties inside the classroom. For example, some of the students had the responsibility to clean up stations, and prepare the snack/lunch for the class.
People who want to be a teacher also need to pass a background check, and pass a general teaching certification test, and show they are capable to teach a subject. The important qualities for a kindergarten and elementary teacher are communication skills, patience, physical stamina and resourcefulness. Communication skills signify that teacher has to demonstrate they can communicate the subject they are teaching with the students. Additionally; it signify teachers has to communicate if a students has needs with their parents and administrators. Patience means that teacher have to show tolerance and forbearance with students that may have struggles to learn the material.
Outstanding teachers make decisions centered around the success of their students. These teachers see each child as an individual, recognize each child’s strengths and weaknesses, and work to provide opportunities that reach the child at a level that is appropriate for them. Outstanding teachers believe in the capability of all of their students to grow and experience success. They capitalize on students’ strengths in order to develop the confidence necessary for each student to continue to make gains. Teachers work to develop the whole-child so that they may be prepared for the future.
Flexibility is the utmost important thing that a teacher must be, because there are always announcements, assemblies and changes to the set schedules. As new kids come into your classroom every year, you must also be flexible with the way that you teach because every student learns differently from the ones that you previously had. Patience, adaptability, imagination, teamwork and leadership are also some important skills and abilities that one must have. There can be many hardships to come the way of a teacher, and you must be prepared for anything that you are faced

A number of ways to establish a safe and supportive learning environment is to stay within what is deemed as conventional rules and disciplines. A typical class room layout is rows of desks and chairs facing the front, it is the usual expected layout for learners and encourages them to accept conformity, something as simple as sitting on the chairs facing the front of the classroom is reassuring to the majority that the class is safe. In days of yesteryear the students would be expected to stand up when the teacher entered the room and wait for permission to be seated, thankfully those days are in the distant past and now it is acceptable to remain talking until the teacher is ready to begin class.

Language: the language that teachers use has to be high level, which conveys a sense of professionalism that is honourable, moral and dignified. Professional judgement: the teacher should be able to place the needs of the students at the center of professional judgement. There is a school of thought which says that judgement grows with time and implies knowledge and wisdom, that teachers’ judgment improves with time.
