Overanalyzing The Psalls

When looking at the reading assignments three things stuck out for me. One of those things is the nature and levels of biblical narratives. Another point I found interesting is the way the authors show the correlation of the Old Testament Law to Christians today. The last point that really stood out is the Psalms. They are a very intricate part of Scripture with a lot of different interpretive principles to remember when reading. The Biblical narrative is one of the most well-known form of literature within the Bible. This is where we get the stories that we all grew up with as children. They are full of imagery and poetry. Sime of the Psalms are joyful, others are sad, still others are angry. All of the Bible is the inspired written word of God. The Psalms are unique because they “are words spoken to God or about God and these words, too, are Gods words.”6 The cool thing about the Psalms is that they are examples of people talking to God. We get a glimpse of how to pray and what we can talk to God about through the Psalms. They present some challenges when it comes to interpreting. If one overanalyzes the Psalms we lose part of the meaning. They were written as poetry and not meant to be interpreted literally. Several kinds of psalms exist. Some of these forms are laments, thanksgiving, praise and wisdom. The imprecatory Psalms are interesting. I had never heard of them before. These Psalms are just rants. The author was angry about his situation and asked God to deal with it in the worst imaginable ways. What I found interesting is that God includes these in his word. Often I think that when we go to God in prayer, we feel we have to be reverent and act a certain way. The truth is God can handle it when we are angry and just scream at him.
