In this document, James Henry Gooding writes a letter to President Abraham Lincoln in September of 1863, with a complaint regarding his mistreatment and low pay as a soldier. Gooding, as well as his fellow soldiers, believe that they are being underpaid for the work that they are doing, but he first asks forgiveness for addressing the President. “… But the earnest solicitation of my comrades in arms besides the genuine interest felt by myself in the matter is my excuse, for placing before the Executive Head of the Nation our Common Grievance” (Gooding, 221). He continues by explaining that on the 6th of August, a man from the Department of Payment was sent to inform the soldiers that he would pay them $10 per month, but everyone in the regiment knew that he would never keep his word.
What happens when you use stereotypes is you draw on predetermined notions about certain racial or ethnic groups to define a person or group of people. These prejudiced views may not be entirely true based on our readings. An example of stereotypes is taking Latin Americans to be drug addicts as we discussed in class. Stereotypes of indigenous peoples are prevalent in the media like our ‘Ethnic Notions’ documentary in class of African Americans being perceived in film and media. Most often, the stereotypes that we formulate in our minds are what we decode from the media.

If you’ve ever seen The Breakfast Club, you’ll know that at the beginning of the movie each teen identified as and viewed each other as a different archetype: a brain, an athlete, a basket-case, a princess, and a criminal. But by the end of the film, they were able to understand and admit that they all share many of the characteristics associated with each other’s groups, and that they had all simplified each other to a stereotype. This is how I feel about archetypes, too—archetypes are easy and can fit one’s surface, but they are not realistic. Humans are dynamic beings and no person can fit into one static stereotype.

Awareness that all people have biases is the first way to recognize them. Tweedy shares a great example of how these biases present, and the outcome they can have, especially in the medical world, “Missing a blood clot in the patients’ painful leg because the doctor thinks that black people in a given clinic or hospital are likely to be drug addicts seeking their next fix is far more dangerous kind of insult than a salesperson assuming that a black customer cannot afford a Brook brother suit… These stakes make it vitally important for doctors to understand their capacity for prejudice (Tweedy pg 152). Without even realizing it, stereotypes have undeniably played an enormous role in individual lives. Minds seem to already set a certain image in them based on the people they encounter. Stereotype a word that harbours judgements and ideas of how an individual or groups should act depending on factors such as social status, culture, sexual orientation and nationality. It is still used very often in today’s society but most of it consist of ideas that are proved to be false or exaggerated but nonetheless these unrealistic judgements are spread amongst society through propaganda, traditional and social media.
