Overcoming Obstacles In Homer's The Odyssey

In Homer’s “The Odyssey”, Odysseus has to face many obstacles on his journey. In many ways, Odysseus’ journey is similar to life. Odysseus’ goal that he wanted to achieve was to make it back to his homeland after fighting in the Trojan war. My goal is to become a photographer. I will have struggles like Odysseus did, and I will learn to overcome them.

My first obstacle that I will have to face will be college. I will have to go to college to become a photographer, but it isn’t that easy. I will have to take all my general education classes before I can start studying photography. The obstacle of college would relate to the monster in “The Odyssey”, Scylla. Homer said in the epic poem, “Then Scylla made her strike, whisking six of my best men from the ship.” (1236, 188-189) This is a good comparison because not everyone that goes to college makes it through. When you go to college you have to work hard to get your diploma, and some people get caught up in other things instead. Money will be an obstacle for me because photographers don’t make very much money, and college is expensive. While I am paying for college I would still have to be paying for basic things like food, and rent if I choose to live away from home. I would compare this obstacle to Calypso because when you get into debt it is very hard to get out. In “The Odyssey” Calypso kept Odysseus at her island for 7 years until Hermes finally forced her to let him go. Homer stated in book 5, “For seven of the ten years Odysseus has spent wandering the Mediterranean Sea, he has been held captive by the goddess Calypso on her island.” (1206-summary) I may never overcome this obstacle but I will learn to manage
