Through different trials and tribulations and defeating obstacles, there are always those people that will stand by you to help you through any problem in life, to be your support system or even go out of their way to solve issues for you. Those people are conventionally considered to be your best friends and considered the force behind you thriving in life. In the stories, A Prayer for Owen Meany and The Kite Runner, two characters, Owen Meany and Hassan, were two disadvantaged people that didn’t let their disadvantages in life and society interfere with taking care of their friends. Some of the actions that both characters committed can be arguably classified as scary, daring, selfless, and having a long lasting mental effect. Hassan and Owen Meany, throughout the adventures of their stories, can be seen as parallels, both are remembered through memories, taken advantage of, and under appreciated. While both Hassan and Owen share many similarities, and can be classified as heroes and people who go above and beyond to help and protect the people that they love, there are still many differences upon how they go about caring for their relationships with their best friends. Owen Meany’s actions for his friend is more on the extreme side compared to Hassan’s. He physically harmed his friend for the greater good and in order to keep his friend away from a life threatening situation, in the terms of his idea being totally crazy, Owen was kind of thought as a hero even after he cut of the finger of his friend. “It was Owen Meany who kept me out of Vietnam—a trick that only Owen could have managed. “JUST THINK OF THIS AS MY LITTLE GIFT TO YOU”—that was how he put it.” (Irving) “A trick that only Owen could have managed,” this shows that Owen could get away with anything and pull it off. Owen thought out his action, which did indeed succeed on keeping John out of Vietnam. While in The Kite Runner, it was a complete switch in the situation, instead of hurting his friend; Hassan took the pain for his friend. He allowed himself to be used and abused in order for his friend to benefit from the action and not even get a small portion of gratitude back from it, instead he was just oppressed even more by Amir who didn’t know how to properly rid himself of the guilt he felt so he took it out on Hassan.
