Since I was little, I have always wanted to go into nursing, but I was never sure what field of nursing I wanted to do. After doing clinicals in different areas of the hospital, I realize that being in the operating room was by far my favorite experience yet. I am seriously considering becoming an OR nurse after I graduate. I have always found the human body to be a fascinating thing and seeing it first hand in surgery was amazing. I was lucky enough to see three laparoscopic Nissen surgeries, a double mastectomy, and the removal of melanoma. In clinicals I have seen the entire process of someone going through with a surgery starting with the ambulatory care unit and ending with the post-anesthesia care unit. This includes monitoring vital signs, administering necessary medications, and checking the patient’s level of consciousness. When the OR team brought the patient into the PACU, the nurse verified that she was receiving the correct. The report that the OR nurse gave included the name of the patient, the surgery done, and what medications the patient had received. The report seemed to follow the SBAR report technique by describing the situation, background, and assessment, but did not have a recommendation aspect to it. The report was appropriate and accurate information that was useful to the PACU nurse receiving the patient. For a Nissen surgery, the specific nursing assessments a PACU nurse will observe for is pain from the procedure and nausea or vomiting from the anesthesia. To be discharged from the PACU the patient has to meet certain criteria that includes the following: being awake, alert, and oriented, no active nausea or vomiting, stable vital signs, and free of pain or at a tolerable level. If the patient is being discharged home, they must also void, be relatively pain free, have received oral and written discharge instructions and a driver to pick them
