Freedom, that's what students think about college. They have total freedom to do what they want. Students come to college and are excited to be treated like adults. However, parents are demanding that colleges offer students a waiver plan for FERPA, which allows parents to have full access to the students academic/social life on campus. As a student, Glendale Community College should not implement this legislation that allows parents access to the students on campus information. Although it is good for the parents to be involved and give their student support, it is not good to continue to give the parent access as if the student is still a minor. Every student has an option to opt out of FERPA, with the consequence of the school notifying the parent. Parents are saying they are fearful of student suicide, and want to be given aspect of the students social conduct (“Changing Parent Demands” 4). People may say advising concerns give an insight to a student's life, however, as a student my grades do not portray my social life. I have been enrolled in GCC for several months and not once has anyone reached out to me concerning my numerous absences. That being said, if I signed the waiver, would the school have reached out to my parents, if they won't reach out to me? Moreover, the college campus is big and full of thousands of students who live different lifestyles.
