The book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian” by Sherman Alexie, was a very popular book because it is different from normal books. The author wrote the book with a perspective of a young high school boy named Arnold Spirit Jr. from Spokane Indian Reservation. Arnold was born with hydrocephalus, and it didn't make his life easier. He is the only person on the reservation(rez) who sees a future for himself. He goes through an incredible story to get the happiness he deserves. Along the journey there is laughter, tears, and heart breaks. It was hard at first to move into a different school environment while being the only Indian there but eventually he found his place and felt as if he finally belong somewhere. The book also has a unique writing style and has a lot of humor between each character. The writing style is reading from the Arnold point of view and reading it feels like the reader is going with Arnold and his journey. An example is on page 127 the passage is about how Arnold went to homecoming with his new white friends, and how they were going out to eat but he couldn't afford to pay and told his friend that he “forgot his wallet”. Soon people started to suspect that Arnold is poor and Penelope, his love interest, went up to conform if he was poor. The text says “‘Are you poor?’ I couldn't lie to her anymore. ‘Yes,’ I said. ‘I'm poor.’ I figured she was going to march out of my life right then. But she didn't. Arnold can not be himself because he finally got people to respect him and he is scared to mess everything up because “he is poor”. By adding the concept with a good plot makes that book popular and people enjoy reading it because they feel they are right next to Arnold in the journey to discover more about himself. Another example that shows how unique and different the writing style is is on pages 1 and 2, it states “I was born with water on the brain. Okay, so that's not exactly true. I was actually born with too much cerebrospinal fluid inside my skull. But cerebral spinal fluid is just the doctors' fancy way of saying brain grease. And brain grease works inside the lobes like car grease works inside an engine. It keeps things running smooth and fast. But weirdo me, I was born with too much grease inside my skull, and it got all thick and muddy and disgusting, and it only mucked up the works.
