Dashed dreams to huge success?
Paul Miller was an extremely keen rugby player who saw a future in the sport. But a severe knee injurie put an end to that. But instead of letting that putt him down he transferred that passion and drive to another sport which he instantly found success and joy in. and progressed through the grades at his local club races, he found himself racing in the premier A grade racing against some of the best ridders in New Zealand.
From a young age Paul always wanted to be a professional rugby player but that did not quite work out for him. He found himself at teachers college in Christchurch. Most weekends he would help his brothers out by driving them and supporting them at bike races. Paul said, “I was picking up a wheel for one of my brothers from a bike shop,” and the dealer said he had a bike in his size that he could do a deal on, and that where it all started. He said, “I started at 23 years of age, had a lot of basic skills, fitness and endurance to catch up on as compared to all those riders who had been doing it since they were 15 or 16 years old.” Paul really struggled for 2 years to do very well at all in sport and Paul said, “Those top guys smashed me most weeks.” But after 2 years he started seeing some success and he said, “After about two years I got hooked on the sport and have been really passionate about it ever since.”
