Description

The short story “ peace and war” is about a person that has routines. On a daily basis he follows the routines of taking a taxi to his destination to a deserted area where there's trenches build on the opposite of their opponents. The trenches are comfortable and it provides with inadequate necessaries. As he mentions “ The place wasn't totally lacking in amenities. It was furnished with tables, chairs, a small, stove, kitchens utensils, not to mention a sound system and a portable television set.” He has a friend, Walter that has been with him through the start of the war experience. In ‘Walter my partner’ there's the repetition with the ‘er’ and ‘a’ sounds; ‘the terrain between the two trenches’ there's the repetitions of the ‘t’, ‘e’, ‘r’ and ‘w’ sounds; similarly, in ‘committee had been’ there's the ‘double e’ sound and in ‘nick of time’ there is the ‘I’ sound. Scliar uses metaphor in his work, when he says ‘in the nick of time’ as he compares two thing and that is the nick and time. Nick being a small notch, groove, or chip and time being indefinite and continuous duration. There is also an example of hyperbole used. As the author exaggerates for an deliberate effect in ‘hole in my budget’ and ‘utter bore’. Satires is indicated in the story as the author portrays society's numbing to life's tragedies by depicting a furistic satire in where war is merely a job. War is no longer seen as horrific, bloody, or violent. It's not done for the glory or patriotism but sustained for economic reasons. An example of onomatopoeia and personification was produced in the text, ‘ At the moment we heard a crack and the whine of a bullet over our heads.’ The crack of the bullets us an onomatopoeia and it is used to emphasize the bullet and the way it cuts through the silence.
