In the article, “Savage Inequalities: Children in U.S. Schools”, by Jonathan Kozol, discusses the inequalities that exist in class differences. Money is spent more in wealthy areas than in the poor or low class areas. The schools located in the wealthy areas are funded more and receive more supplies and better teachers. The schools in the not-so-wealthy areas do not have the best teachers and they need better teachers than the students in the wealthy areas. Kozol displays how schools are still segregated as they were in the past.

Introduction The book I will be reviewing is Teaching with Poverty in Mind written by Eric Jensen. The book was originally published in 1950 while our copy was printed in 2009 through the ASCD publication company. This book is used in our EDUC 200 Developmental Sciences and the Context of Poverty class to give us insight to challenges that could be present with poverty and schools. Jensen’s book illustrates the story of Mr. Hawkins a teacher’s experiences and growth working with children living in poverty.

In my opinion, racial injustice is still a problem in the United States criminal justice system. While the circumstances of the Trayvon Martin case did not affect me personally, it had a large impact on Miami-Dade County. Over the course of history, many oppressive systems have been overthrown by the people whom they belittled. Even today, here in our country that boasts the ideology of freedom, we continue to be oppressed under the false pretense of education. You might ask how that is possible because you don’t feel oppressed. Well, it is because that is how you have been conditioned to think by some of your teachers, and the education system.
As these prejudices are uncovered, we can begin to see that Aboriginal traditions offer a store of knowledge from which we can learn to “rebuild, heal, recover, and restore healthy” relationships (Batiste 1998). As future teachers, we cannot continue to allow Aboriginal students to be given a fragmented and broken existence in a curriculum that does not reflect them, nor should they be denied understanding the historical context that has created this disconnection, no matter the age and severity of the content at hand. A postcolonial framework cannot be constructed without Indigenous people’s renewing and reconstructing the principles underlying their knowledge (Batiste 1986). Paulo Freire describes this in “Pedagogy of the Oppressed”: “One cannot expect positive results from an educational or political action program which fails to respect the particular view of the world held by

Freire refers to this as “The Banking Concept of Education,” where teachers teach and students listen and don’t question what they are being told.
