Contract grading has widely been embraced in first-year college writing classrooms, which has necessitated new types of responses to writing. Engagement-based assessment criteria such as contract grading do not require a professor's responses as a primary concern for student writers while revising their work. With this in mind, first-year writing students under contract grading ought to focus on feedback from their peer writing fellows which could guarantee their success in the course. The study discussed in the article "Crafting a Writing Response Community Through Contract Grading" by Sarah Klotz and Kristina Reardon entails a follow-up on 24 students across two first-year writing sections held in Fall of 2020. Emergent self-knowledge of personal writing influences how approaches will be taken to develop writing skills in students. Utilisation of a writer’s journal enables emerging writers to understand relationships between the purpose of a journal activity and the intended audience (Bishop, 1996, p.34). Acknowledgement of self-emergence as a writer enables the author to include additional information into their work for clarity of the text, therefore enhancing that knowledge attained, ensuring the writer understands the importance of skills associated with writing polished pieces of writing. It is important for educators to have a refined understanding of language and how it works. Research shows the more understanding an educator has on developing writing skills in their students, the task involved will become less complicated, resulting in meaningful learning experiences for students (Loane & Muir, 2017, p. xviii).
Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be a challenge for me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to transition my thoughts from my mind to the paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of required writing ended up helping me in numerous ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me for college and real life by giving me a foundation of effective learning strategies.
We have reached the end of the semester unconsciously. During this semester, we’ve practiced and improved our writing by outlining, composing, editing, and revising. Throughout the process, I discovered my strengths and weaknesses, meanwhile, I tried hard to refine my writing skills. By now, we have focused on a few types of writing: rhetorical analysis, critical analysis, and argument. Remembered our first in-class essay was a rhetorical analysis of an argument.
Not So Fast”, conducts her own study with a few colleagues to take notes on how students writing skills are changing. She decides to conduct another one twenty five years later to see how much the writing skills have changed since technology has been updated and became more available to students. She found that “students today are writing more than ever before.” Although we still have the same amount of writing errors as before, the patterns of errors are different. Many people argue that technology is only making our writing skill worse, this study helps to prove a different theory.
Whenever I think about what I have learned since the beginning of this course—English 101, It always gives me a great pleasure to tell myself and people around me that I have learned something great; something that can make me a better writer. However, I have learned some writing skills based on the course’s teaching learning objectives that can help me in my future courses. Also, I’m glad, because my strength in writing essays have increased. Most especially, writing narrative essay in MLA formatting. I might not be an excellent writer, but I know I have not stopped learning, and I know I will get pay-off in the long run if I can keep the ongoing pace of my learning—guaranteed.
At its core, “Responding--Really Responding-- to Other Students’ Writing” is about correcting the common misconceptions and fantasies that many students seem to possess about peer reviewing. Richard Straub, a former professor at Florida State University, starts off portraying the mindset of a student going about peer reviewing in all of the wrong ways (Bishop 162). Some of the mistakes are things like “Make your comments brief.” or “Don’t praise anything really... no need to get harsh or cut throat either.”
This semester I completed Composition 2. During the course I wrote three essays. Like Composition 1, I had the option to rewrite my papers after seeing the grade. Having the chance to rewrite my papers was very beneficial because I could improve my grade, and more importantly, learn what I was doing wrong. Amongst my writings, three major flaws stood out.
The U.S. is one of the biggest countries that host a large number of students from all over the world. Through the years the American colleges and universities are attracting the student from different nations. Students come overseas to obtain the degree that wanted. Talking, reading and writing in English are the biggest purpose of coming to the United States. Statics show that non-native students facing difficulties to write in a formal way, and that’s the most issues that’s facing the students.
After I wrote my first draft, I had to go back to revise a lot of paragraphs and add to my ideas. Again, I feel that the in class peer review did not help very much. Most students do not take the peer reviews serious and only do the bear minimum when revising each others papers. I had my girlfriend and my mother proofread this paper for me and that helped me clear up the ideas. Also, reading the paper out loud helped me clear up my ideas and grammar.
Academics in Sydney, Australia are starting to take a more serious look at Wikipedia. They've learned that students in higher education are simply not interested in the traditional way of learning and have embarked on an adventure to let their university students write and edit article on Wikipedia. This is a learning experience for the students and the lecturers at the University of Sydney. Students write articles and they look at the feedback presented by others that read their articles. This is a way for students in academic writing courses to receive feedback from peers, teachers, and others from around the world.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
Writing essays and other types of posts has always been difficult for me. But, throughout this composition class, I have learned many interesting and new things about the different types of writing styles. When starting this class, I considered myself to be an average writer with run-of-the-mill vocabulary, ordinary sentence structure and typical finished products. This class has helped me greatly improve my writing skills in a variety of ways. I have learned multiple things by taking this class, such as new ways to approach writing and that there is much that I still need to learn about composition.
During this semester, the peer review sessions have been most helpful, and especially helpful when paired with students who are more knowledgeable than I. Moreover, when going into these peer review sessions, most of the time I had a very rough draft of the assigned essay, but after the session, I knew exactly which steps I needed to take to improve my work. Additionally, when polishing my papers I would turn to the tutor before making the peer review suggested changes, but in retrospect, I now realize that I should make the suggested amendments first and then turn it into a tutor for
Whenever you have the opportunity to critique someone else’s written work, you can see it from a different perspective and with a fresh set of new ideas. Sometimes when the work is all your own, you subconsciously already have a preconceived thought process that can be tough to deter yourself from. It also assisted in helping me to better understand the instructions for the assignment, the criteria that was expected, and taught me methods on how to better critique my own written work. As a result of this assignment, I was able to see my paper in a different light. My classmate’s critique offered me several different positive viewpoints in regards to the body and flow of my paper.
