In the essay “The Rock Lexicon” author Chuck Klosterman gives a lesson about the various forms of Rock and Roll along with the modern terms used in popular culture to describe them. Klosterman begins with a discussion he was having with his sister, while driving in a rental car. This discussion began with his sister’s statement, “I don’t read your magazine anymore because all you guys ever write about is emo, and I don’t get it” (Silverman). Klosterman uses this conversation, in which his sister essentially means is that she is not reading his articles anymore, because she can’t understand or interpret what she is reading when they use musical jargon. This conversation made Klosterman realize that his sister is probably not the only person

Perhaps one of the main reasons why some genres of music, metal in particular, are disregarded as being dangerous and harmful to its listeners is that they dare take on themes and subjects that no-one else dares to. When for example a metal singer sings, screams or wails of their struggle with faith, they are often assumed to only be attempting to provoke a more conservative part of the public. In fact, their music, is alike all other music, a creative outlet for their feelings, that goes on to inspire and influence their many listeners who may be struggling with similar issues. When you choose to give these kind of lyrics a chance, you come to realise the deeper reasoning and philosophy behind the lyrics, and that they aren’t only made to disturb and garner attention.

Contemporary Christian music can actually be related to most stereotypes that people have about Christians in general. People perceive Christians as dull area people that attempt to be as connected to secular things as possible while still keeping a label, and although I do not believe in the authenticity of that stereotype, I do believe contemporary Christian music can be related to this saying. As I ponder on why contemporary Christian music is this way, it seems that the only reason why the genre exists is because secular rock music has influenced Christian music as a whole. Secular rock music created a subgenre within Christian music that tries to make music that can be accepted in the secular community, while still having this “Christian”
