Percy Jackson, The main character in the Lightning Thief is following the path of a hero in “The hero's Journey. Percy Jackson was the better hero than Odysseus. Percy Jackson was a great leader and he meets the qualifications needed to be a better hero. Qualities that a hero should possess in order to be a leader are quick- thinking, caring for others, and trusting the right people. Percy Jackson is the better hero because he is a quick thinker. When Percy and his friends were swallowed up by Charybdis Percy instantly decided they needed to find a way out fast.
This book shows the conflict between good and evil, and in order to defeat the evil you have to overcome the many struggles in the journey. The two main Demi-Gods of the series, Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase, become separated from the others in the group and fall into the deep treacherous Tartarus, which is an abyss beneath Hades, the lord of the underworld. Knowing they are in the physical body of the antagonist’s, or Gaea’s husband, the two begin their bizarre journey through the terrifying landscape towards their destination, the Doors of Death, which will get them out of Tartarus to help their friends in the adventure. While Percy and Annabeth go through Tartarus, the other five demigods along with two friends try to get to Greece, but along the way they face numerous enemies who are trying to keep them from reaching the Doors of Death and reuniting all seven of the Demigods to kill the Titan, Gaea. Percy first states that, “‘ I will kill Gaea,’ he muttered.
Percy has learned his role throughout the story as he journeys to bring back what was taken from his uncle (Zeus) to keep peace in the world. The book, Percy Jackson: The Battle Of The Labyrinth, by Rick Riordan is an amazing book about a group of demigods (half human half god) that have to save their camp from being destroyed by the evil forces of Kronos. Kronos is a titan that the gods banished to the deepest part of the underworld (Tartarus) after a war against them. Now that the titans are rising once again, the protagonists must travel through an ancient Labyrinth to stop them from demolishing their camp and temporarily halt them from achieving their goal of destroying Mount Olympus and the gods. This literary analysis will show the interesting relationships between some of the characters, and how the setting that they were in affected them throughout their journey.
Still however the characters are very alike in both their motivations. Odysseus and Percy Jackson define as being epic heroes because of their bravery, and the strength they find within themselves. Their reaction to their world define their different values and attitudes is they start to learn about them. They find what the gods like or dislike. The relationships with their mother and wife shaped them as the men they are because they helped motivate them to do the right thing and get back to their world.
Throughout “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan, the main character Percy Jackson grows in many ways. Through application of Joseph Campbell’s Hero Cycle, Percy’s development as a leader over the course of “The Lightning Thief” can be analyzed (Campbell). Percy is born into the hero’s cycle at his natural birth and his call to adventure is the attack by Mrs. Dodds. Percy crosses the threshold, when he leaves Montauk with his mother and Grover and the first trial testing his leadership is on the bus with the furies. Trials exemplifying Percy’s growth include: the furies, Medusa, the Saint Louis Arch, the “Waterland” Waterpark, the Lotus Hotel, Crusty’s Waterbed Palace, and Hades and the Underworld.
