We can learn several important information from these two speeches. They are mostly political speeches. Usually leaders of the country or the important person of the country will give those speeches after having important events or wars. Also, father can give the speech for their member of the family or even friend to speak with each other or to praise the life of the dead. In this essay we will talk about two popular funeral speeches in the history, which are Plato’s Menexeneus and Pericles’ Funeral Oration. Pericles gives the funeral Oration after the first year of the Peloponnesian of the war. All of the Athenians try to sacrifice for the city because they love the city. It is very honor to die from your city and it a good way to die while you are fighting with the enemy of your city or empire. Also, he talks about that the ancestors the grandfathers and father create the city and they make the city to be the great city. The new generation should protect the city from any bad things that may happen to the city and we should improve the quality of the city. Pericles describes the city that is democracy and the system of government where men advance on merit rather than on class or wealth. Pericles then continues the speech about the central them, praising the virtue of the city and it is system of the government.
