According to National Geographic, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is proceeding with their mission to put astronauts on the Moon in 2020 to land a Moon base transfer point in between Earth and Mars. This story is based in the year 2121, more than a hundred years after the mission goes well and NASA is able to achieve human space travel to Mars and the Moon. The airport on the Moon is a very important place to transfer planes and gather supplies for the long flight to Mars. Like any airport, there is a leisure room, stores and workers! My Science Fiction narrative would be about a young girl traveling with her father, a NASA astronomer, and her experience in this airport. Throughout her time on the moon, Peri learns …show more content…

Some scientists believe that a station on the Moon is unnecessary for the trip to Mars. But the Moon is a great starting ground nearby and considering humans haven't even step foot on Mars, yet. Christopher McKay, a planetary scientist with NASA explained it well with the metaphor that building a base on the moon is like going camping in your backyard when you're preparing for a camping trip in the Sahara. This essay will discuss the harsh realities of long term space flight and the innovations to combat these issues and the possibilities and movements NASA is taking to building on the …show more content…

There are many different types of radiation in space: solar flare particles, particles trapped in Earth’s magnetic field and cosmic rays that are heavy ions with high energy. These particles can be absorbed by astronauts and can damage DNA. Earth’s atmosphere has the amazing capability to absorb some of this harmful radiation in our atmosphere’s clouds and dust. The amount of radiation astronauts receive depends on their orbital inclination, attitude about earth, solar cycle and the astronauts susceptibility. Highly charged and high energy particles are rayed upon astronauts causing some known and unknown effects. According to an essay by Dr. Cucinotta and Prof. Durante, radiation for astronauts predicts at least a 3% risk of death from cancer. Researchers have found that some people who have grown up and adapted to a very high natural radiation in their particular hometown have acquired high adaptive responses to radiation. Looking toward the future, it might be smart to pick candidates for the Mars exploration who prove to have adapted to heavy radiation on Earth. Heavy shielding on windows can help reduce the amount of rays but, not all. Shielding is used on the international space station to help this issue. These are two possible answers to this intense
