I read a couple of graphic novels in my life. But, I have to say Persepolis was the best one yet. People may say that graphic novels are for kids and you can’t learn anything by looking at the pictures. You're wrong, most of the graphic novels that I read made me want to read more and this was one of them. I read the book Persepolis and I thought it was an excellent book. Graphic novels may be good books to read but, traditional novels are good to read also, because it improves your reading abilities. I believe that graphic novels should continue to be taught in our Junior English curriculum because graphic novels have a direct/straightforward layout, they engage the reader better, and they have fast paced plots making it exciting to read. One reason why graphic novels are better than the regular novel is the layout of the graphic novel is straightforward. Which, gives readers a better understanding of the story. For example, in the Chapter, “The Keys,” the author uses pictures to show how little Marji felt when her Uncle Anoosh died. Giving readers that relationship to understand what just happened and to also visually see what Marji's face looked when her uncle died. Traditional novels does not have any pictures to show so I wonder how the readers would comprehend this using just words. This might not engage readers as much as the graphic novel does since it has pictures. But, some teachers will think the pictures in the graphic novels have really no meaning and disable students to use their reading skills. Well, if students are not interested or engaged in the book that they are reading, how are the students stay focused if they are not into the book they are reading?
