Persepolis Photo Essay
In the book Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi’s perspective influences her demonstration of social class, imperialism, and revolution. Her perspective throughout the book influences to a great extent due to many outside factors. Consider her, wealth, age, and location as the main influences altering her outlook on these three specific topics. Social class has been demonstrated a specific way in Persepolis, due to Marjane and her perspective. Social class is the division in a society due to wealth or status, which is clearly represented in the image selected. Multiple regular civilians cannot compare to the wealth and status to one man in the upper class.Marjane is in the upper class, this affects her views upon this topic positively. Her wealth in the story and her family’s position in politics makes her experiences better than most during this time. Revolution is when civilians stand up for a change in the government. This picture depicts people boycotting in favor of a new system, which is a revolution. Marjane explains the revolution going on in a bizarre way, considering her location she is right in the middle of the whole thing. Therefore, her perspective on the whole ordeal is quite extreme. Marjane is, again, in the center of the whole thing and sees a lot of devastation for being so young. Specifically, Marjane says, “ After the death of Neda Baba-Levy, my life took a new turn. In 1984, I was fourteen and a rebel. Nothing scared me anymore.” (Satrapi 143) This example happened right after Marjane’s house got bombed. Furthermore, due to her witnessing this and having this traumatic thing she became hard and lost all morals for awhile. Hence, this shows how her location in Iran was very impactful on her point of
