For this project, the topic that our group chose was Persia. Some of the unique things about this civilization were related to inventions, religion, and architecture. One of the most interesting Persian inventions was the “freezer,” which they called “yakhchals.” During the winter months, ice was taken from the nearby mountains in order to store it for the summer months and to ensure that they would be able to use it all year around. Typically, yakhchals were domed buildings made of heat-resistant material that had trenches on the outside. This allowed them to put water inside the trenches, so that they could refreeze the water during the cold temperatures in the desert at night. Persian architecture had great variety, but yet it could hardly be mistaken for any other civilization’s architecture. They had very specific methods pertaining to the structural and aesthetic style, which is what made the architecture extremely unique and beautiful. They placed huge values on balance and homogeneity when constructing and designing buildings. Also, another big factor that was kept in mind was climate because Persian cities typically had/have hot summers and very cold, dry winters, so they designed their buildings and made changes to them according to the climate. In conclusion, Persians treated women well and had a typical social hierarchy of a civilization of that time period. According to the Avesta (the Zoroastrian text), Persian women would have social freedom, legal freedom, and would be treated with great respect (even though this was during a period of time when women were deprived of their basic rights). Although women were treated well, many others were treated poorly based on the social hierarchy because of their occupation as well as social
