A person-centred approach focuses on the individual. Their right to choose, dignity, respect, individuality, independence, privacy and rights.
Everyone is different, which makes us all unique individuals. Some individuals require more support and care in their lives, but their right to individuality is the same. They have the same right to respect, dignity, privacy and choice.
No one should make any assumptions about any individual. All and any care and support must be specifically tailored to the unique needs of the service user and their choices. A risk assessment underlines the risks and gives solutions to how to handle these risks and to prevent the risks from happening. It gives carers instructions on how the risk is to be avoided.
Individuals in care have the right to freedom of choice – if they choose to smoke then we, as carers, do not have the right to stop them from doing so even if we disagree with that decision. Individuals in care settings should be treated as any other human being and with the same dignity and respect. If an individual is incontinent through the night and doesn’t want to wear incontinence pads, then a risk assessment should be carried out and other avenues explored.
Risk assessments should be reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that they are up to date and take account the changing needs and preferences of the individual.
It is your duty to provide a choice and the individual’s right to choose. A risk assessment documents the fact that an individual is aware of all risks associated with the action they wish to take, are aware of any consequences, but still wishes to carry it out.
