In a culture that values individual achievement and self-reliance as a norm, we as individuals can stand back and know that there will be times when we can no longer move forward alone and reach out for help, advice, and comfort from others. For many, this is hard to do for fear of being looked down upon, considered weak, or unorganized. However, this is not the case many significant accomplishments have come to fruition from those that have come together and collaborated on issues that seem impossible to overcome. In my professional career, there have been efforts by leaders that I worked for to educate, guide and strengthen our environment to be more collaborative. I enjoy my view from the sidelines as my employees get the recognition they deserve for what they do. However, I do admit that even when I am on the sideline watching the accomplishments of my employees, it is nice that my superiors show appreciation toward me developing future leaders. Sipe suggest that employees do not seek pay as a primary driver for being happy they value the appreciation given to them for what they do for the company. In the IT profession, a sense of team is essential, while some of the functions are specialized, working together as a community is critical. Bemmoleje, states that a team is a group of people with complementary skills that are committed to a common mission, and vision and hold themselves accountable. While this meaning is straightforward, it is something that needs continuous work, or the sense of team will decline. Where I work at the state, the IT department is massive we have over seven hundred employees throughout the state. Getting the word out to such a large group has its challenges. Three years ago we started a daily meeting called Operations and Intelligence (O & I) that happens every morning from 10 am to 11 am over Skype. The purpose of this meeting is to connect all the employees; we talk about operational challenges if an employee needs assistance and are not sure the direction to take it can be brought up at this meeting. However, this concept can be a challenge to most companies. One reason is our culture of individualism which praises those that do it on their own. However, many successful organizations pride themselves on the collaborative spirit. Bachelder stated it best that a leader has the courage to take people to a daring destination yet, humble enough to come alongside them to develop an environment of superior performance. Ms. Bachleder’s statement resonated with me as a servant leader it is about caring for those that you work with, showing them you appreciate the time they spend wanting to see their company grow. To work in an environment where there is a sense of family all moving along the same path. The path is not smooth there will be obstacles and conflict. The Dalai Lama explains that we must show interest, respect, concern, and share meaningful dialog with those that we disagree.
