What is the American image and culture.? As though this question might seem easy, the question, “ What is the American image and culture?” is a question at some point people have asked themselves and certainly other organization or institution have attempted to answer on one’s behalf. Ever since the establishment of the American civilization, many people believed that culture and identity are qualities and factors that unite a particular group of people. As easy it may seem, for one to find his or her identity, they must feel like they belong in that particular culture. It comes with a lot of positive and negative affect. I, Isaac Asante, being an immigrant from Ghana and living in the United States by far has been the most challenging task in my life. Not only did I had to forgo some of my extended family in Ghana, close and distant friends but more importantly my childhood and naviance adolescent life and experiences. Unlike other bilingual students or children that had it difficult to construct their own identity in America, or bilingual people who tried to hide their identity, my pedestal was different. As a kid who lived in the city, I thought I knew what the American image and culture was based on my exposure to American movies and medias. I remembered when my mother told me about us moving to New York, I was really happy because I was going to be living in the city that never sleeps. A city filled with people from diverse background who tolerated people from different background. I imagined living in a house with a garden, surrounded by caring neighbors and going to school in a cheese bus. However, my reality in living in NY was different from what I thought my ideal
