Being an American is not classified by who you are or what color your skin is, but it is about coming together as one and working for something special. This is how America become itself, by hardworking men and women coming together to create greatness. This has helped us get where we are today. Respect is also a big part of being an American. We have a duty as an American to show respect to the flag. Being an American means that we as individuals have options. Not everyone in the world has the amount of options and freedom that we are blessed with.
Americans working hard is what made and is why America continues to prosper. In the essay, “What is an American”, by J Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, Crevecoeur says that America is about people coming from all over the world and doing hard labor to change America into something great. Crevecoeur states, “Here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men, whose labours and posterity will one day cause great change in the world”(33). This is not only being respectful to your peer and others around you, but to the flag, the troops, and the United States of America. In the short story “Veterans Day” by John McCain, McCain tells a story of a fellow soldier Mike Christian sewing a flag into his shirt, so the soldiers could recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. McCain states “Duty, honor, country. We must never forget those thousands of Americans who, with their courage, with their sacrifice and with their lives, made those words live for all of us” (7). This quote is a strong example of respect, because even though they were in a rough spot in the war, it did not stop them from showing their devotion and respect for their country.
