1. How do these versions differ? These versions differ because while reading the prologue in the book, The Alchemist, the alchemist notices a book. While reading the book it is about the legend of Narcissus.
The hero's journey is a classic narrative pattern that has appeared in stories and myths across cultures and ages. It involves a hero who embarks on a journey, faces challenges and obstacles, and ultimately brings about a change in their life. Two texts that explore the hero's journey are "Monsters" and "The Alchemist." In "Monsters," the main character Sully embarks on a journey to help a young human girl, Boo, return home. This journey represents the hero's departure from their ordinary world, as Sully leaves the familiar world of the factory to venture into the unknown world beyond the door.
Because of the alchemist telling him this, he knows his Personal Legend and continues to work for it. Out of the many challenges people face in life, some still just give up instead of persevering. The Alchemist, however, shows that people should never give up, but instead fight through bad situations to complete their goals. Others may think we are just suffering when we persevere, but “no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity” (Coelho 134).
Narcissus was the son of Cephissus, a river god and Liriope, a nymph. He was born with great beauty and was loved by all who came across him. However, Narcissus was also incredibly egotistic and became obsessed with his appearance, constantly admiring himself. Narcissus becomes captivated by his own reflection and falls in love with himself.

The story of Narcissus was a tragic and famous tale in Greek mythology. It was significant to the Greeks because of the important lesson hidden in the tale. It has been spread around, teaching everyone about the importance of arrogance and pride. It was a significant myth, because it shows negative traits a main character has. Narcissus was a beautiful but vain man.
In the article, Narcissus had many differences than the article given in class: “Narcissus cruelly refused to accept Echo’s love; she was so humiliated that she hid in a cave and wasted away until nothing was left of her but her voice.” In this version of the myth, Echo wastes away after her rejection. Echo being left with only her voice after death to echo others forever. Before Narcissus fell in love and drown himself like in the original article. In this text as well, Narcissus did not drown.
1. In the prologue, the alchemist reads a version if the story of the death of Narcissus that has a somewhat different ending from the traditional telling, one that emphasizes the grief of the lake into which Narcissus will no longer be looking at his reflection. In beginning the book with this story, what themes and relationships is Coelho telling us to watch for throughout Santiago’s story? Do you think there may be an element of “narcissism” in the pursuit of one’s personal legend?

I believe the myth goes much deeper than a justification of sexual pathologies. As Douglas Everett once said,"There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other. " What this essentially means is that there are people who live in dreams, the other’s live in mind and there are some who believe that true meaning of living exists in following their dreams so they try to make their dreams reality. I agree with this quote because some people just dream about things and leave it; while, others don’t believe in dreams at all. Then there are some people who actually try to convert their dreams into reality because they think that dreams are for a reason. This quote is best designed for Paulo Coelho book titled “The Alchemist” as Santiago constantly works to convert his dream into reality
