At Miller Children Hospital in Long Beach I have developed certain skills that are necessary in order to go into the Human Services Career. At Miller I have learned how to communicate with different people, learn how to take things not seriously, and how to not let my emotions get in the way of assisting children and family. When I go back and think about my first semester of internship I remember how difficult it was to open up to different people and build rapport with them. I remember being quite, nervous, and questioning my abilities in the Human Service career. Throughout my internship I have become more confident I am able to open up to people without being intimidated.
A major healthcare concern is making medicine available to those who are impoverished and live in underserved areas. I grew up in Gloversville, New York, a medium sized town that was at one point considered the most impoverished city in the state. Growing up in this region has given me understanding of what life is like in underserved areas. I 've witnessed first hand, the difference in opportunity between myself and students coming from a more urbanized background. It is easy to empathize with those who do not receive proper treatment due to demographic disadvantages.
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old to change my area of employment and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I realize the fact I was brought up by two dysfunctional, abusive parents in a chaotic home lead me to search out that same type of familiar relationship when I left home at the age of seventeen. In short, I married a domestic violence abuser and alcoholic when I was 19 years-old and had 5 children. Ten years into the marriage, when I had finally reached the end of my rope, a local police officer helped me to obtain a Protection from Abuse order and removed my husband from the home. As I completed the test that would help me in what career I should do I realized that Physical Therapist was perfect for me. Something interesting that I learned that a PT does is that they help individuals that have conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. Something that caught my attention that the PTs do is that they help people, and I personally love helping people with any kind of problems. But something that disappointed me was the fact that people don’t get to move a certain part of their body is disappointing; like I want to be that spark in them that makes them believe they will move again. Everything seemed interested to me in the other hand though.
I braced against my opponent on the field-- calves burning, sweat soaking through my hair. Anxiety overcame me. I spent the first 19 years of my life living in Camp Verde, Arizona which, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services, is a rural HPSA - Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area. To ensure we were all healthy my mother greatly relied on the county health clinic and mobile clinics that offered free vaccinations and reduced cost health screenings. The most significant and challenging disadvantage I faced was our family’s socioeconomic status; my father made roughly 14,000-30,000 dollars a year supporting his four boys and wife. Food stamps, reduced lunch and unemployment benefits ensured that we were all fed and had shelter. My parents divorced and by 14 I was working after school and on the weekends to pay my mother rent.
At the beginning of my sophomore year, August 2015, I fractured my left ankle. My second season of cross country had just begun. The whole team had a Saturday practice at Atlanta Memorial Park. We came to this park for a time trial. Not being able to run was going to be a challenge for me.
