Rabih Alameddine once said, “I believe one has to escape oneself to discover oneself.” Discovery is about leaving the comfort zone to gain new understands and renewed perceptions of ourselves. Discover can lead us to new worlds and new values, and enables us to explore the possibilities in the future. Discover also encourages us to find new things that we have never found or thought. Life is a lesson in discovery and literature provides us with a vehicle to explore life's experiences.

Crackle, pop the fire sounded as I placed new logs on top of the hot embers. This was the fire the children of my village sat around and told stories before they went to sleep, and tonight was no different. All of their eyes stared at me expectantly as they waited for me to start telling them a story. “Two Rivers Running, tell us the Story of the Great Battle again,” the little ones asked. All eyes were on me as I sat down next to them, everyone silent as I told them the story of the Great Battle.
I have been doing some thinking about our conversation a few days ago and have concluded that I will take you up on the offer! I just sold my old bike and now have some money left over that I can use to pay for those seminars. The sun glistened in the daybreak and a dark figure appeared on the foreground, and moved gracefully across the pathway, nearing the bench that presided at my side. My eyes scoured upward as he neared and the sun blinded me, but not before I saw the figure, a man, glance my direction and change his course. He was wrapped in an opaque tunic that countered the illuminated color of his hair, it was a halcyonic gold that glistened against the flare of day. His trousers were khaki color that exalted the man’s frame. Once my eyes cleared and I was able to open them the man was closer than before and I was able to see his face much more clearly.

There is an old Moorish proverb that reads, “He who does not travel, does not know the value of man.” That quote resonates deep within me because I have a yearning to use my education to empower those in need. In order to do so, I need to see and experience the world outside of the one I am accustomed to. Curiosity is one of the traits that define the person that I am; because of this trait I always ask questions about the world around me and the people I meet. This is one of the driving forces behind my desire to venture outside of the United States to learn a new language and culture.
Challenging myself to think outside metaphorical and physical boundaries of the world is the only place in my life where I have felt as though I truly belong. If I stop challenging myself, I lose a part of who I am. (Student-Athlete Leadership Team), it seemed interesting to me so I decided to fill out an application. One chilly night in late November as my family and I were eating dinner, my mom and dad told my sister and I they had very exciting news. I couldn’t image what it could’ve been. A pet dog? A trip to California? I had no clue!
Transformative discoveries can force individuals to alter their preconceived ideas about the world around them. The stimulation of new ideas allows a renewed perception of one’s values, understanding of themselves and the world around them. This is successfully utilised through, Miroslav Holub’s poem “The Door”, Shaun Tan’s picture book “The Red Tree” and Ang Lee’s Film “Life of Pi”. These three texts exemplify the struggles that lead to discovery which shapes the protagonist’s perception of their values, the world, and their surroundings.
Everybody knows that there are four seasons, and everyone has their favorite one out of all of them. Mine is when the woods turns into a coloring book of orange and red, when I put a nice warm batch of hot co-co on the stove, and were all of my family comes together every year.
