It was a chilly day when it started. Leaves had just begin to fall ever so gracefully. Joey was just getting the hang of high school. He had known Jessica for a while. Maybe even for 5 years. Joey had started talking to Jessica every day. Texting her. Making her laugh. He had never thought of her like that. No. They are just friends and that’s how Joey likes it. He started to feel butterflies in his stomach. They were currently in lunch with one more class left. The room had an essence of chicken and it was surprisingly quiet. Joey and Jessica had been chatting the whole ride up in the back seat. They departed from the car and walked up the path to the football field, chatting and laughing and having a lively time. When they reached the football game, a wave of people filled their eyes. It was surprisingly crowded for a freezing cold football game at 8:00 at night. Joey and his friends found an opening along the fence to watch the game at, since the bleachers were packed fuller than a sardine can. For the first half, everybody was settling in, watching the game, being bitten by the frosty, unforgiving air. By the second half, everybody was moving around to stay warm, or snuggling up with a blanket. Joey realized he had under packed by just bringing a sweatshirt. To stay warm, He left Jessica's side and started moving around and hanging out with some of his friends sheltered from the frostbitten wind behind the bleachers. It was pretty fun, teasing each other, cracking jokes and just being childish. But that didn’t last for long. At least for Joey it didn’t. His friends starting saying to him, “Hey man Jessica really likes you!” and, “You should totally ask her out!” Joey mostly ignored these but they were exactly what he had been wanting to say. It was almost therapeutic to him. After about three minutes of people on and off saying that they should date, he actually began to consider it. Joey reflected on these thoughts, rationalizing the idea. He kept weighing the pros and cons of asking her out. Finally something snapped in his head. He realized that if he kept thinking about it and not ask Jessica, he would never know the answer. He couldn’t keep living his life in denial. Joey was going to ask her out. Tonight. Right now. He walked over to Jessica and asked her to speak in private. Jessica agreed happily and they walked off to the side, where nobody was. Joey stopped walking and swallowed deeply. Jessica looked
