Personal Narrative: Cheerleading

The lights were blinding. The crowd was waiting anxiously. I sat quietly, while my heart raced at a thousand miles per second. I was in Dallas, Texas, on a cold February day. There was almost an inch of fading snow on the ground and the whole city was in panic. Streets were shut down, but my team and I still managed to make it to the nationals cheerleaders association competition. Their mantra is “the work is worth it,” but we’ll see. This was like the olympics of cheerleading and I couldn’t wait. My team and I had been working for months on perfecting two minutes and thirty second of the hardest routine we have ever had. Blood, sweat and tears were shed on a daily. Every night we practice for hours and I had countless panic attacks over not doing homework. Our main goal, to win NCA. After lining up we sat next to the reigning champs. They congratulated us and said that we did so well. Every team made their way to the floor and sat down. They called 16th, then 15th, then 14th, but they still hadn't called us. Before we knew it they called the last three teams up. We went to the middle of the floor and the three teams sat in the winner’s circle. They called third and that team went and sat down on the side, slightly disappointed. It was us and the reigning champs left. I felt like I was about to pass out from all the anticipation. And second place is....... Starlight! I bust into tears yet again. “WE WON!” We stood up and clamped but we were all crying and shaking. “And first place is Ace Fierce!” Confetti cannons shot all around us. We were on the floor hugging each other tightly. No one needed oxygen, we just wanted the trophy. I collected the banner and trophy as we took a team picture; I smiled past the tears.
