Tolkien’s, The Fellowship of the Ring, the quote above is given by Gandalf to Frodo. In the context of the story, the quote relates to Frodo leaving the shire in order to bring the ring to Mordor. In regards to this essay, however, this quote relates to my aspirations as a writer. The purpose of this personal narrative revision is simple. Through quotes and reflections on my years of writing, I intend to provide a detailed narrative of how my school years have shaped my writing abilities and how this class strengthened my writing skills. Shortly into the school year, my fear about writing was absolved when I began scoring well on essays and papers. At the time, I was happy. It appeared that I was fairly good at writing, but I still wasn’t writing outside of class. My desire to write remained constant; however, I did nothing with it. When senior year started, I opted out of several of my regular classes so that I could take college classes. One of the college classes I would have to take in order graduate was English. In the weeks preceding the class, my old fear returned. Once again I began questioning my ability as a writer. What if the teachers at my school were too easy on me and I was really awful at writing. What if I didn’t get in an A in the class, or any of the papers for that matter? Once the class began I was faced with the dreaded first paper. I worked as hard as possible writing and proofreading it, and was later delighted to discover that I had made an A.
