Jessica, a naïve 24 year old college student, woke up in a daze and very confused. It was dark and smoky, and she could feel something wet running down her face. Last she remembers she was leaving the Halloween party that was being held at a haunted hotel in New Orleans. She was invited to this party through her sorority. All the girls and their brother fraternities attended this party every year. It had become a tradition. The hotel was enormous and everyone was dressed in the most bizarre costumes. Jessica with her athletic build was dressed as a mysterious clown; however, she was very unaware of the danger she was going to get into that night. She felt relieved to have her support there; yet, still uneasy waiting for his arrival. James, her boyfriend of 3 years, on this night, which was their anniversary would have a dozen pink roses delivered wherever she would be; however, this night would not be their anniversary. He had ended their relationship the week before for no reason. Jessica in her youthful way, danced with her friends and hid every emotion that was going through her mind. There were guys from other fraternities that would try to talk to her, buy her drinks; however, with her sweet self she would just smile, say no and continuing dancing with her friends. She knew all her friends where at the party with her, in other words, the only person that would be texting her at this time of the night would be James. She anxiously checked her phone and it was him, asking if she would meet him to talk tonight. Jessica’s face lit up, and at the same time, her friends knew she would leave to go and meet him. She tried to make excuses; however, they knew the truth. They walked her to her car knowing it would be dangerous for her to drive all the way back to Thibodaux; nevertheless, they let her go. She promised she would be safe and would not use her phone. That promise became a lie, when she felt she needed to answer his text. While driving the dark, lonely road home, she pulled out her phone to let him know she was on her way. The bright light from her screen distracted her from seeing the possum come from the side of the road. As she looked up, which seemed only seconds to her, she slammed on her brakes, skid and her car lost all control and slid into the ditch. Her car was upside down and had smoke coming out of the hood.
