In 2009, I had just completed my annual physical for the fire department and was unhealthy. The doctor said I was pre-diabetic, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Coincidently, my wife also received similar news from her doctor during that same time frame. A short time went by and I happened to be working with an old friend, Kevin, at the firehouse. I hadn 't seen Kevin for a few months so I was surprised to see that he had lost weight and was in great shape.
Around the month of February, I purchased a scale so I could finally weigh myself. I had been eating 1600 calories every day and I felt good about myself. When I
All I ever eat is tuna. If I do not have the scrumptious fish for lunch, I have it for dinner at least four times a week. There is no end to my unhealthy obsession with Katsuwonus pelamis and Thunnus albacares. In fact, there was a small period in my life when I was pescatarian, and the only fish I ate was tuna. I am now back to being a regular omnivore, eating vegetables and meats.
I knew my diet was trash but didn’t have the motivation to change it. That changed when I looked in the mirror and realized I’d put on 60lbs since high school. I didn’t look great and I didn’t feel too hot either. I wanted to live a healthier lifestyle.
In the mid-sixteenth century, the religious reformation was led by Luther and his 95 theses as well as the Diet of Worms in the Germanic states. From this reformation, peasants sparked an uprising against the German land-owning nobility and the aristocracy. The tension between the oppressed peasants and influential Germanic aristocracy caused an aggressive response, tabulating another blow for the peasantry and their newfound Lutheran ideals. In 95 Theses, Luther mentions the error in the giving of indulgences within the church system.
I knew I wanted to be a dietitian when I was 16 and years old. My mother had health problems due to anemia, needed a blood transfusion and was told that she needed to make diet and lifestyle changes to improve her health. Many of her issues were resolved by a healthy diet, increasing exercise, and losing weight. The ending result not only improved my mother’s health but my own health as well. That is when I knew that nutrition and health was my calling.
Telling yourself one slice of pizza will make you fat. Working out for two hours instead of one even though you don't have the time in your schedule. Cutting out all forms of sugary foods from your diet. Refusing to drink something just because of its caloric content. Staring at yourself in the mirror and pointing out all of your physical flaws.
Addiction is a powerful thing to encounter, cope or live with. An addiction is worse when it is experienced with a loved one. This illness has many negative affects regardless to the extent of the addiction. It has caused family and marital separations that are not easily overcome without a determined mindset.
As of now, I am five foot ten and weigh about one hundred and sixty five pounds. I have gained roughly seventy pounds over the last four years. Needless to say I have gained a lot of size and strength along with growing taller which only helped in the process. Weightlifting has changed my life drastically for the better and I do not regret it. The only regret I have is that I should have started earlier but better late than never.
Before beginning my 24 hour fast, I was mostly concerned about the idea of being hungry and how I would cope with that because I love food. I was doubting my ability to successfully make it through the day without faltering. For my week long fast, I was worried about keeping up to date about what was going on in my friends’ lives. I was worried I would miss out on things that everyone else got to experience through social media. I was also concerned with how I would spend my time without social media because if I am being honest, most of my time that is not spent on homework or with my family is spent on my phone.
Action Plan Summary For module two my action plan to reach my goal of reducing my chance of developing diabetes by reducing the amount of sugar I consumed was to drink nothing but 2 liters of water at least 5 times a week, as well as cutting down on sugary snacks in my diet. For module three, my action plan to reach my goal of gaining 5 pounds in three months was to perform strength training at least 3 days a week doing routines for different muscle groups each day. I have been going through with my plan, but I have only managed to put on 3 pounds of muscle in the last 2 months. Although I am a little behind on my progress towards my goal, I plan to keep going forward and accomplish as much as I can. For module four, my action plan was to track to food I eat every week and to make sure what I am consuming meets the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
For example, girls will style their hair to “become more attractive” (Berger 2014), or they will purchase ‘minimizer,’ ‘maximizer,’ ‘training,’ or ‘shaping’ bras, hoping that their breasts will conform to their idealized body image” (Berger 2014). This all appears to be harmless activities, yet when body image is only addressed outwardly and not psychologically, there can be an increase in poor and destructive behaviors. For instance, body image dissatisfaction can lead to poor self-esteem, which can create a cycle of increased body dissatisfaction, followed by decreasing self-esteem (Stapleton et al., 2017). Ultimately, a teenage girl can find herself in a cycle of “depression, eating disorders and obesity” (Stapleton et al., 2017). On study in 2012 revealed, “Two-thirds of U.S. high school girls are trying to lose weight, even though only one-fourth are actually overweight or obese” (Berger 2014).
A behavior that I struggle with and would like to change most is my unhealthy diet. When I looked back at my family medical history I learned that my grandfather died from a heart attack, and I don't want that to happen to me. I think it would help me lose weight and prevent me from getting heart disease if I stopped eating so much junk food. It is a challenge to eat healthy because usually the unhealthy food is cheaper and tastes better. I've tried to diet before
