Personal Narrative: Living With Autism

The life experiences that have shaped who I am today came from living with Autism and ADHD. I have learned how to build an extraordinary life by turning the negatives of these diagnoses to positives in my life. I have also learned how to push myself out of my comfort zone to attempt new experiences regardless of the chance of success or failure.
There was concern when I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD that I wouldn’t be able to have a normal productive life. I was non-verbal and didn’t interact with others, preferring to stay in my own world. It was thought that my best opportunity would be in a sheltered work environment. My parents believed that I was capable of more than that so they gave me a computer and a camera and this changed my world and how I interacted in it completely.
I could do so many activities on the computer that allowed me to express myself and what I wanted and needed. My parents and therapists could help me transition away from using the computer completely with PECS …show more content…

My camera allowed me to show the people around me my life perspective as a person of Autism which is not the same as other people. In elementary school I entered my photos in the PTA sponsored “Reflections” competition and won several awards at school, district and state levels. These opportunities helped me socially as people took note of my work and would praise me for my work, accepting me for who I am. I could gain more acceptance as I was on my middle school yearbook staff. As I transition into high school I began to take photography, graphic design and illustration and animation courses to prepare for my future as an animator. I have used these skills to create a Stop-Action feature for a physics class assignment that was honored by my school last fall. I will be able to use my camera and graphics arts skills to help create my animation
