I was eight years old. When I was a young boy, sports and numbers always piqued my interest. In fact, a family friend bought me a complete set of over 700 baseball cards when I was only five years old. Captivated, I quickly memorized the statistics, positions, and even the birthdays of the players on every card.
We stayed at their house for the weekend just waiting impatiently for Sunday. We spent a lot of time Friday and Saturday goes out to eat, shooting at the range, and just hanging out with each other. On Friday, Brendan, Parker (his friend), and I traveled to spectate at the Lapeer football game. They were one game away from going undefeated. There were so many people there, way more than an Alpena football game.
I started grid kid football when I was in 7th grade and I am still playing until this very day. I used to play lots of running back and wide receiver and some corner. My coaches really liked me and it was my first year and I already took people that been playing longer than me postions. Adrenaline pulsing through my body and anxiety filling up in my stomach, I quickly throw on my football gear and head out to the practice field. It’s a nice hot day in Ocala, Florida, with the sun beating down on our necks, we stand side by side in line waiting to be picked to play second, third, or fourth string in a play. Waiting in anticipation, each of us grinding our teeth, watching first string pure athletes colliding against each other like gladiators to have possession of a ball made at one-time of “pig’s skin”. To some people, the game of American football makes no sense, whether it’s the idea of trying to protect a ball or running and passing it to make a goal for your team. People like this, see the concept of football and understand why millions of people love it; but to them the sport is pointless and causes way too many casualties.
