Personal Narrative: My First Civic's Production Of Annie

For the past couple of months, I have had the wonderful opportunity to take part in Civic's production of “Annie.” This being my first Civic show, working with the incredible directors and cast members has been remarkable and a great learning experience. In addition to rehearsing for the production, I also participate in voice, piano, and dance lessons; meaning taking on all of these activities, in addition to homework, can be quite the task. But, I love every moment of it. I know talent can only get me so far; it’s perseverance and indefatigability that take you to where you want to go. Music is something I want to pursue. I partake in various group dance numbers, such as NYC, New Deal for Christmas, Hooverville, and a brief duet dance. At times, the dancing would become difficult to undertake. I began to listen more attentively to how the steps were incorporated into the music, and I completely switched perspectives on the dances, making is much easier to perform them all.

In the Boylan sisters scene of the production, I play the role of the “water girl.” Essentially, I stand upstage of the Boylan sisters and provide water to the radio staff. This is the smallest role I play, but it is my favorite. It’s my favorite, because I have the privilege of creating my own character. To me, it is imperative to know everything you possibly can about your character, even if it is as small of a part as the water girl!
