Upon arriving to Miami Dade College, you will never imagine all the resources offered to students to succeed during their scholastic years. I’ve been lucky enough to been advised by some of the best staff at their Interamerican campus. From their advisement office to their profoundly knowledgeable professors. As a current student of ENC1102, we were required to attend one section with a tutor at the writing center. I always thought I had sufficient knowledge of the English language and taking time out of my busy schedule to attend a section with a tutor was absurd.
When I was was younger, I was a caterpillar crawling around trying to get through life, waiting to turn into the beautiful butterfly I know I could soon become. I made good decisions along with bad ones, saw the beauty in life as well as the unpleasant. I was like everyone else trying to be their own person, but now as I look at myself in the mirror I can finally see who I really am. I see myself as the beautiful butterfly I once dreamed of becoming, ready to fly down my own path. I have been in my chrysalis and I am finally out and ready to fly into my bright future.
I first started thinking about college seriously two years ago. Last year was when I first heard about your college, Dallas Baptist University. It sounded too good to be true. A college close to my home, I could drive home every other weekend. You have good programs and degrees based off of my career interests.
I am first generation college student. I started Florida Gulf Coast University four years after I migrated from Jamaica along with my Dad, in pursuits of “an opportunity”- something that is very scarce outside of the continental United States. Before coming to FGCU, I went to Miramar High School; I graduated with honors and promised my Dad that within four years I would bring home my bachelors degree in Finance. August 14th, 2013 marked move in day at Florida Gulf Coast University. My first few weeks at Florida Gulf Coast University introduced me to the dreariest days and nights of my life.
In my freshman year, I made a choice to relinquish some of my social life and replace that time giving back to my community. I joined a non-profit organization called the Volunteer Corp. We spent our time at food banks, park clean-ups, and even hosting local events. This experience left a lasting impression on me in many ways; however, one experience changed my perspective on life and serve as a constant reminder of how the smallest contribution to others can be the most powerful. St. Joseph University, in Philadelphia, held an event called Hand in Hand. It was an event dedicated to raising awareness for people with physical and/or developmental disabilities.
My whole life long, I have been trying to find a place where I can truly fit in. I have also been worried about what I would do when I grew up. I was torn between my passion for horses and my passion for performing. There was no way I could give up one for the other, so I searched the net for Christian colleges that had majors in both equine studies and vocal performance and there it appeared: Asbury University. It was manna from Heaven.
Getting involved means being apart of something more, having the chance to met different people, helping out the community, but its also means learning more about who you are as a person. Starting off at Washburn University I plan to get involved right away, in activities or clubs that would help my academically and socially like the Hispanic club , Freethinkers and French club. I will set goals for myself and achieve them, some small some big. One goal I am pursuing right now is learning french and Portuguese, i plan on going to Brazil next year. School goals, are turning in my work on time, stay focused on any task that is given to me, making sure I understand what i need to do and how to do it.
Next year at Embry-Riddle I plan start studying Cyber Intelligence and Security. Ever since middle school I knew I had a developing interest in the field of computer science and spent most of my time building the skills to excel in my classes. One of the first projects I got to use the computer on was a video for the Oregon Trail. I decided that it would be best to design an advertisement to showcase the facts in a new and creative way. When my group turned the project in, and it was shown to the class my teacher rewrote the assignment according to what we did and used it as an example of great work when recruiting new people.
My mother entered my bedroom and immediately her face widened in absolute shock. “What did you do?” I froze, panicked. I had been discovered. Twelve-year-old me was sitting on the bedroom floor when she had come in.
It was a beautiful Friday afternoon playing softball for only a short amount of time until I noticed a pain that was constant and was not going away. I continued to play not thinking it was something serious. Soon after my arm went numb and tingly, everyone was very concerned, especially my parents. I went to multiply doctors until we found out what was wrong, I had an inflamed and irritated rotator cuff and an inflamed tendon. I did not think I would ever play again and neither did my teammates, coaches, and family members.
Growing up in the small town of Clarksville, TN my whole life, I never had to be the new girl at school. I went to high school with the same kids I went to pre-k with, up until my junior year. One afternoon, I heard about a new opportunity for me- Middle College at Austin Peay State University. Getting into Middle College was no easy task, but I took the chance.
My first day at Miami Dade College is an important event in my life. For me it is an unforgettable day in my life, since it was a goal proposed and fulfilled. College life is a life of freedom. I was waiting on the day when my university life could start, the expected day finally arrived, and it was a very light day the sky cleared. When she arrives at the Miami Dade College, a person named Michelle gave me a tour around the college to explain to me where are the parking lots, the offices of the councilors and the classrooms where they taught to the subjects.
As second semesters began in Columbia County schools, I recapped on how much I change from my freshman year to senior year. In my freshman year, I hear several students planning in their future and trying to planning on what they going to put in their college application. While I plan on a career field that I want to go to, I learn different strategies on how to study academies effectively. I join one sports in my Jrotc program, which is call Raider Team. I enjoy on physical fitness since I want to stay healthy and live a longer life.
My college search began when I entered the eighth grade and did not begin to wrap up until the beginning of my senior year. As soon as the concept of attending a university for four years began to become a reality, I became borderline obsessed with finding the “perfect” school - a haven of sorts, where I imagined myself being instantly welcomed by an openminded, intellectual, and conscious student body. The university of my dreams was prestigious, internationally renowned, and committed to helping others both on a local and a global scale. Most importantly, I hoped to find a school where I could imagine myself not only flourishing as a student, but also as a person. Santa Clara University is one of the only institutions I have come across that
My biggest goal in college Earl Nightingale argues, ”Your problem is to bridge the gap between where you are now and the goal you intended to reach”. I believe college education is something to be endured in order to become qualified to obtain certain kinds of jobs. After finishing a bachelor degree in computer science, I become a data engineer. My job requires me to have a strong background in programming and statistic which I learned in the classes. And the habits I built at the university such as self-teaching, critical thinking and the ability to collecting and processing information help me a lot during my work.
