In Shakespeare 's acclaimed romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, the death of the two main characters can be attributed to two things. Their love for each other, and the social expectations of their time. A love so powerful, yet unthinkable sustains irrational thinking and impulsive actions, and results in the suicides of Juliet and Romeo. Social expectations of their time only add fuel to the flames, in that it gives them cause to kill themselves and pressures them into it. The tragic death of the two lovers Romeo and Juliet could be the fault of their love for one another.
In addition, when Romeo asks the nurse who Juliet is and it is revealed she is a Capulet, Romeo’s family’s enemy, he acts as if his life is over despite having just met her. When the nurse informs Romeo that Juliet’s mother is Lady Capulet, Romeo says to himself, “Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foe’s debt.” (1.5).

Romeo and Juliet are ill-fated lovers from William Shakespeare’s world renowned play – Romeo and Juliet, who are destined to die due to their families’ age-old hatred for one another. From the start, the pair are greatly influenced by other characters, certain events occurring throughout the play and most importantly, personal weakness. It is not the fault of one, but many where the downfall occurred, from Romeo’s impulsivity, Juliet’s obedience and Friar Laurence’s arrogance. Shakespeare’s characterization of Romeo and Juliet causes the downfall upon themselves which involves impulsivity and naivety.
In 384-322 BCE, there was once a Greek philosopher named Aristotle. The towering figure made contributions to fields like math, english, science, politics, agriculture, and a lot on theater. He wrote two hundred treatises, and from this, thirty-one of them survived. Devoting his time and effort into his work, he influenced authors to write great books. I walked past the huge white gates, and into the big red barn filled with horses and hay. I walk down the path covered with the fresh golden hay to Juliet’s stall. Juliet was the biggest horse ever and she could run faster than a race car, and I was soon going to find this out... the hard way! I let Juliet out of her stall with shaking hands and took her over to where Grandpa would put the saddle on Juliet’s back.
“We have still lost a good friend,” replies Lord Montague. “Blood will not pay the price for the hole in our hearts,” remarks Romeo as they return home. The Capulet family mourns the loss for many nights to come. “Although this tragedy has struck us suddenly, we must not postpone the marriage,” says Old Capulet.
In Romeo and Juliet, there are many complex characters that make this play more dramatic and interesting. Romeo is clearly one example of a complex character, where his romanticism blurs his sense of reality. An example of where this is seen during the play is when he falls for Juliet even though he declares that there is no one better than the woman he previously loved, Rosaline. Another example is when Romeo realizes that because of how he has lost his sense of reality, he has let his friend Mercutio die to one of their enemies: Tybalt. These two instances show how complex a character Romeo is and this shows how people in the real world can be similar to him by being complex and difficult to understand.

Modern life and Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet don’t tend to correlate. However, in the play Friar Lawrence warns Romeo “Wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast”. In both the play and in modern life, there are people who are eager for instant gratification. This leads to the assumption that most people tend to move too quickly and rush into things. Acting on impulse in real life can lead to multiple issues and can create more problems than solving them, this is shown prominently throughout the play Romeo and Juliet in many instances, not to mention that the entirety of its plot is set within a week.
