He had no great expectations. As a child Ross Marciani had dreamed of being 2 things when he grew up. First he wanted to be a policeman like his father, to make his father like him and be proud of him and to help people like his father said he did every day. The second thing he wanted to be was a painter; well he thought he wanted to draw and paint and have someone pay him to do it, he didn’t want people to buy his drawings and take them away from him though. Both of his dreams had been shattered at an early stage of his life when it was discovered that he was colour-blind. George is Lance Corporal Ross Merciani’s sergeant and one of his closest friends. I say the hurdle, this morning Ross has faced many. The first of today was to resist Karryn’s sexual advances just after the alarm clock had woken them in George and Karryn’s luxuriant, larger than king size, custom made bed. The next obstacle he overcame was managing not to say the wrong thing when Karryn had told him she was expecting his baby when she returned from the bathroom waving a positive pregnancy test. The third was his having to gather up his khaki t-shirt, camouflage jacket and trainers and one of Karryn’s light green hair ties from a pot on her dresser before escaping out onto the balcony, combing his long blonde wavy hair back away from his face with his fingers, swirling it tight in a low position on his head and wrapping it into the band like he would have if he were about to put on his helmet.
