Homelessness must be addressed immediately because it is undoubtedly one of the biggest issues facing modern society that anyone might experience. It's important to examine the causes of homelessness to comprehend it. Homelessness doesn't just happen; there are many contributing causes, each of which is unique to each person. It may not be noticeable, but millions of people are homeless all over the world. Those who are lucky won't be directly impacted, but for many, each day is a struggle to survive. Additionally, if we do not address the issue, the effects it has on society will eventually have an impact on all of us, thus groups and government policies are working to take action now. In the last five to ten years, a lot of cities, particularly large metropolises on the East and West coasts of the United States, have adopted distinct strategies known as Housing First. Housing First attempts to get homeless individuals off the streets and into a self-supporting environment that will keep them housed and self-sufficient. Their goal is to get homeless persons into supportive housing as soon as possible. Straughan says, "Thought is that it’s a lot more likely that a person will work on their problems if they’re in an apartment or single-room occupancy facility" (Noël 42). According to studies, formerly homeless people who now live in stable housing are twice as likely to be employed, twice as likely to be in good physical and mental health, twice as likely to be abstinent from substance abuse, and twice as likely to avoid going to jail than homeless people who live in shelters or on the streets. Villa Harvey Mandel, a project created by Father Joe's Villages, opened in May 2003. For individuals with extremely low incomes, who were formerly homeless and had persistent physical disabilities, substance misuse issues, and mental illness, a $13.3 million housing facility with 90 units was built. Support services like medical and dental care, counseling, job training, placement assistance, legal assistance, information and referral, and help with entitlement programs are available close by. It wasn't simple getting the project approved. Father Joe's Villages met with the East Village and Barrio Logan Groups since getting project permission wasn't simple and they needed to take action against negative perspectives.
