Personal Narrative: Sophomore Year High School Volleyball

My volleyball passion started when I was in the 6th grade. I remember that I wanted to play because my dad introduced me to the sport because he coaches it. Anyway, although at the young age I wasn’t very good; and I looked like a deer in the headlights, and I knew I wanted to improve. 6th-7th grade we only had a traveling team, but once school started I was so excited. A lot of girls went out the first 3 years of school volleyball, and it was tough for individual help, but it was still fun. Sophomore year volleyball has been by far the most obvious year of improvement and it has also been the most enjoyable because I got so much out of it and I also got close with a lot of the girls. Practicing with the older girls is so much faster, and you get a lot more out of it because it’s more of a game like situation. Our starting rotation was Maddie Johnson, Karina Zimmer, Isabelle Hawkins, Laiken McAleer, me, and Tori Banowetz. My position is middle hitter. I think this is a hard position because for one you have to block all three positions (left, middle, and right), and blocking isn’t very easy for me, and getting a hit is like realizing you have an extra 4 hours to sleep; the best feeling in the world. Also, sometimes when you’re upset the ball is someone's face, so you hit it harder. For our season this year, we went 5-3 which means we had five wins and three losses - this does not include out tournaments. The best tournament we ever played was at North Scott. That day we play Assumption, Davenport North, Bettendorf, and PV. That day we won against Assumption for the first time ever. I can’t explain the feeling we got after that win, it was Christmas day for a little kid. We all played as a team and had amazing attitudes, which is pretty much the only way you can win. We also won against Davenport North, but that wasn’t a shocker because we don’t usually struggle against them. We ended up losing to Bettendorf and PV, but the score was never to far off and we played with the same good attitudes like before. That day we got about third out of eight
