Being a leader is one thing but standing in front of a group only adds to the pressure of being a leader. A leader that does not like standing in front of a group is normally asking for problems. The reader may wonder, how can leaders lead and not like standing in front of a group. Not all leaders can stand in front of a group because of various reasons. For those that are always standing in front of a group, it becomes easy for them. I for one do not care too much about standing in front of an audience. I tend to get nervous and almost forget what I am speaking on. After I had taken my first sergeant job, I had to get comfortable with standing in front of more than 100 people on a daily basis. I never thought that I would be as nervous as I was to be in front of any Soldier. Once the first sergeant stood in front of the Soldiers, everything changed. I was no longer one of the Soldiers. The first sergeant was the one to ensure they knew about everything that was going on and what things there on the rise. For example, the duty roster and any changes of the duty day, among several other things that Soldiers need to know. The first sergeant is in charge of all Soldier training, issues, and discipline. I would always remind the Soldiers that if they needed me at any time, they were always welcome to come and see me. I was asked by the Commandant of WLC to stop by his office because he had reviewed my records and wanted me to work with his unit as a senior leader. He explained to me that he wanted me to come in and help mold Soldiers into the leaders. After the commandant and myself had gone through a series of questions about how I got to the point I am now, I explained to him that I was offered another job that I thought would enhance my career a little more. Not that I did not want to work with the unit, but I had my heart set on trying to learn how to do the budget. I was given the opportunity to work budget at the same time that he offered me a job with him. I knew that this would be my single opportunity of being able to work budget and justified that to the commandant. He understood what I wanted and asked if I could at least speak to his Soldiers during their graduation. I knew the audience and would be able to present a clear and concise speech that would focus on what the leadership course is bringing to the table for them. I share a story with the Soldiers on how they are to provide leadership to their peers. Let them know that you as a leader have been in their shoes at one point in time, and you know exactly some of the issues that they are dealing with. Show them that you were just like them and look
