She claims that Day of the Dead events offer opportunities for Latinos to voice their opinions about current issues, giving them a sense of cultural independence. Furthermore, Marchi argues that the practices and rituals of these Latinos living in the U.S. during the Day of the Dead holiday brings them closer together in the midst of political adversity (Marchi, 73). Soldiers faced the worst of humanity and, most of the time, were shaped in ways that they couldn’t express to their peers and as such had their own unique method of dealing with the horrors that had to bear witness to. For Tim O’Brien, his method of coping with the loss of life that constantly plagued him was creating stories to keep the dead alive. The effect of O’Brien’s fiction writings was that his war stories were not only love stories, but also life stories that speak volumes about the effect death has on the innocence on people. In the United States, death is seen as a tragedy, however, in Mexico, death is celebrated. The day of the dead is an ancient three-day tradition, with each day signifying a different meaning. On this day beginning October thirty-first, loved ones are remembered as he or she journeys through the afterlife,. Moreover, this day is bursting with numerous aspects of diffusion and globalization from other cultures that have shaped the day and the people of Mexico.
I begin with a sunset, as in the poem the sunset is a metaphor for death. I have myself waking up and realizing it was dark as though I am realizing I am close to death. I refuse to accept this getting up and turning on the light. The light is turned off several times and I have to fight to keep it on and keep living.
