The opportunity to perform as a sultry and stupid Latin man seldom presents itself to a 14-year-old white girl. Yet, in the winter of my 8th grade year, I graced the stage for eleven nights as Aldolpho-- a bumbling Spanish lover -- and fake seduced my best friend for a plot to halt a wedding in the musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. Theatre presents wild opportunities. In the eight years of performing, I sung as an operatic wardrobe, sold women to China as a fake Asian, danced as scarecrow who only need a brain, and much, much more. I exist in a world of fake eyelashes, egos the size of Australia, character shoes and confusing cast lists. The toxic environment created by such tales transform the happy, little bubble of Arizona theatre into a ruthless dogfight. This depressing metamorphosis holds especially true in youth theatres. I primarily perform at two theatres in Arizona: Studio 3 and Actor’s Youth Theatre. Recently, a few bad seeds who defected from Studio 3 to AYT planted ideas of wrongdoing and unfairness at Studio 3 into the AYT students heads. These rumors divided people into camps ready to West Side Story dance battle at any time, As someone who knows people at both theatres, two places and two groups of people could not be more the same.
