As human beings we visit the Waikiki Aquarium and only see the place as a paradise home for the Hawaiian Monk Seals. We do not put ourselves into the perspective of the marine animal and see the aquarium through their eyes. My story, “Bumping Into Glass Walls” promotes the idea that we may think the Hawaiian Monk Seals enjoy the aquarium but that could be a false statement. We can come to a conclusion that the Hawaiian Monk Seals do not want to be at the aquarium but end up there because of threats in the Pacific Ocean.

Mission Report by Jaydon Yuki Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was the last mission founded by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuén on June 13, 1798. A mission is a place where people are taught about religion. Father Junipero Serra was a Franciscan friar sent by the King of Spain to spread their religion and claim land for Spain. After Father Serra died in 1784, Father Lasuén took over the responsibility for looking after the missions and founding new missions in Alta California. For a mission to be built, it had to have 3 things: rich soil, water supply, and a large population of natives.

All things are connected.” The Hawaiian monk seal is the nation’s most endangered seal, and one of the world’s most endangered marine mammal. With enough resources scientists can make progress toward achieving and to help maintain a healthy population of these endangered monk seals, but it will not be easy. Preventing interactions between people and seals is a responsibility is something these organizations are going to have to manage.

What started as a thrilling new adventure for American trapper and hunter Sanger Rainsford quickly became a nightmare. On Friday April 15th, 2016, Rainsford traveled to Ship-Trap Island, a small spit of land off the coast of the Caribbean, along with family friend Whitney Johnson with the intention of mounting a hunting expedition in the Amazon. After going up onto the afterdeck and hearing a gunshot, he ran to the railing to see what was all the commotion. He had climbed onto the railing to get a better view and quickly lost his balance, subsequently being thrown into the bitterly cold waters.
Growing up in San Diego was fun. The beach was near my high school and it was the ultimate after school hangout. At the beach, you could enjoy the best homemade ice cream at Mootime Creamery. When my friends were hungry, we would head out to the closest taco shop. My favorite dishes are rolled and fish tacos.
Today was my first day in Tenochtitlan. While I was at the market buying food for myself, an old woman came up to me and asked me if I was a tourist. I said yes. She told me that she would take me to her house, and tell me all about the Aztec culture and the city, when I went to her house I saw a pregnant woman sitting on the couch. She looked up at me, then quickly looked down and ran out of the room.
The number one priority should be to increase the survival rates of the female juvenile monk seals; doing so will ultimately increase the population size. With the programs such as Head Start and the translocation program at French Frigate Shoals, there was evidence of improvement in the monk seal population, but as always there was a decline that followed. The current Recovery Plan for the Hawaiian Monk Seal states that for the monk seal to be downlisted from endangered to threatened, the population needs to be more than 2,900 individuals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and that at least 5 of the 6 main sub-populations need to have more than 100 individuals (National Marine Fisheries Service, 2007). For this to occur, the main criteria that needs to be addressed is the pup and juvenile survival rates. The Hawaiian monk seal population cannot continue to survive and grow if less juvenile female pups are reaching reproductive age and not surviving, this has caused the current decrease in Hawaiian monk seal populations to continue to decrease and to decrease more rapidly (Norris et al, 2011).

Port Renfrew, Vancouver Island, where the fog rises before your eyes. In the summer between the tenth and eleventh grade, my family decided that Vancouver Island would be lovely to visit. I agreed; I would have a chance to photograph what I never have before. Although it was summer, the temperature was significantly lower, with the sun straying close to the clouds. I remember the open sea, in all its unrestrained glory, the way it nipped at me as I strayed near the edge of the cliffs, I did that often.
